Call to the Ant Community of Both Americas

From Birgit C. Schlick-Steiner, Florian M. Steiner and Andy Suarez

*****************************

WANTED:

PAVEMENT ANTS

*****************************

Over the last few years, we have studied the phylogeny and distribution of Tetramorium caespitum group ants in the Palearctic region.

Now we wish to trace the invasion history of pavement ants in North and South America, through comparison with DNA data from the Palearctic region.

Do pavement ants, Tetramorium caespitum group,
occur at your location in North or South America?

• Could you send 10-20 freshly collected pavement ants per nest,

from your location, in 95% ethanol, for DNA analysis?

We hope for a robust response to this request: We will be most grateful, as any distributional data / sample may be crucial to understanding this exciting question.

Sincerely

Andy, Birgit & Florian
