I am interested in doing
chemical analysis of ant exocrine compounds, and have been doing this
for 20+ years. Often this is useful taxonomically, and it is the kind
of thing I can do at a small college. This has been most successful
with Myrmicines such as Monomorium and Solenopsis. Anyway
if you come across nests of these that have
males, please collect the males..There are some very interesting compounds
that could be flight releasor pheromones. I have been stuck on this
for a long time and need to get it done. Here in VA this happens in
late June if there is no draught. You have to open the nest and see
lots of winged ones, just collect them all in about 1ml of methanol.
I would be most grateful for this.. Many times other genera have interesting
chemistry though. If you are in the ant business, and interested in
collaborating, or the details of collecting for chemical analysis,
please get in touch.
